A STUDY OF ADULT STUTTERING

Abstract
The author intended to study stutterings in multiple aspects, especially their individual pro¡©blems, family backgrouds, precipitating factors, ages of onset, and personality profiles.
Materials were comprised from 18 male stutter¡©ings, aged from 18 to 23 years old(mean age 21.3 years old) who were identified out of total 4,112 male youngsters at a general health check-up clinic, and 22 stutterings(20 males and 2 females) who volunteered to this study from institution for stutterings.
1. The percentages of stutterings in male you¡©ngsters (mean age 21.3 years old) was 0.43%. 2. These materials showed male to female ratio as 1 : 10.
3. Tonic stutterings were more common than clonic stutterings.
4. As to their causes the majority of them were undetermined and among the rest of them showed more psychogenic fators than biogenic ones.
5. The predominant ages of onset were 2-5 years old, 6^-9 years old, 10^?13 years old and 14^¢¥17 years old in this order.
6. The most frequent precipitating fator was imitation.
7. Their predominant personality traits were withdrawing depressive personality and obsessive compulsive personality in this order.
8. Their parental character traits showed that over-expecting parents, perfectionistic, strict and over protective mothers.
